American Sign Language-Interpreting Program ASL-Interpreting Instructor Dan Mathis Curriculum Vitae
American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual-manual language used by Deaf people throughout the United States and Canada. According to the Modern Language Association, it is the most popular foreign language that students enroll in. Since 1994, the State of Utah has formally recognized ASL as a foreign language eligible for credit in secondary and post-secondary institutions. At DATC, students build a solid foundation in ASL and a thorough knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community prior to enrollment in the American Sign Language-Interpreting Program.
ASL-Interpreting Instructor Jeff Pollock Curriculum Vitae
There are many career opportunities for people proficient in American Sign Language who become interpreters. Interpreters work in a variety of settings including educational, medical, legal, business, and private/personal situations. There is currently significant demand for competent interpreters in Utah and throughout the nation. The American Sign Language-Interpreting Program at the DATC will prepare students to pass the Novice Level certification exam administered by the Utah Interpreter Program. Additionally, individuals with Novice certification seeking to advance to the Intermediate level can receive individualized instruction focusing on skills that are required to pass the Intermediate certification exam.
This training program will be highly individualized, taught in an immersion format, and prepare students to take the certification exam and enter the workforce. The American Sign Language-Interpreting Program is currently accepting students. For specific information regarding this program, contact Dan Mathis (dan.mathis@datc.edu) or Jeff Pollock (jeff.pollock@datc.edu).
