The Diesel/Heavy Duty Mechanic performs all duties of preventive maintenance and electrical troubleshooting, along with additional training in the areas of transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering, suspension, wheel alignment, engine rebuild, and basic hydraulics and heavy duty HVAC. A student can also specialize in many areas through the College's partnership training. The diesel/heavy duty mechanic field is for the person who enjoys working with their hands, yet enjoys the challenge of working with sophisticated equipment and is self-motivated.
Volvo / Mack Partnership
Through the College/Volvo Partnership, students are introduced to the latest advances in the trucking industry. Volvo training provides familiarization in the latest changes in engine design, microprocessing, air conditioning, and transmissions. Students find this partnership valuable and exciting in discovering what the future holds for them in the diesel technology field. The College/Mack Partnership brings people to the College for training from the entire Western part of the United States. Much of the equipment available for training in the Diesel/Heavy Duty Mechanic Program is provided through that partnership and provides training in the latest changes. This training includes performance analysis, carriers drive lines, engines, transmissions, electrical controls and brakes. This level of training is available through the Mack Truck Corporation at only four other sites in the United States, but the College is the only partnership site. Students participating in this training are able to train along side technicians currently working for Mack Truck, Corporation. These students also earn an industrial certificate from Mack Truck Corporation upon completion of these intensive courses.

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diesel/Heavy Duty Mechanic
As the transportation industry increases its reliance on diesel trucking, the need for qualified service technicians is growing at a rapid rate. These high technology systems have prompted major employers to look for employees who have a two-year degree. The College Diesel/Heavy Duty Mechanic Program, in partnership with Weber State University's Diesel Technology Program, provides the technical training requirements for a two-year AAS degree.
